PTA Introduces New Rule for Disowning Newly Activated SIMs
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) has introduced updated security measures to prevent illegal SIM issuance and unauthorized mobile registrations across the country.
Under the revised policy, the SIM disowning period has been extended from 60 days to 365 days, meaning a newly activated SIM can now only be disowned after one year from the date of activation.
Stricter Steps for Telecom Security
According to PTA officials, the decision has been taken to strengthen security in the telecom sector and protect citizens’ personal data from misuse.
The authority has advised citizens to be very careful while giving biometric verification for SIM registration, as misuse of data can lead to unauthorized SIM issuance and potential legal issues.
Citizens Advised to Check SIMs Registered on CNIC
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has also urged citizens to regularly check the number of SIMs registered against their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
Users can verify their SIMs by:
- Visiting the official SIM information portal
- Sending their CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 via SMS
The regulator further advised citizens to immediately report any suspicious or unauthorized SIMs to their mobile network operators.
Officials emphasized that only personal SIMs should be registered under an individual’s CNIC and encouraged the public to stay alert to prevent misuse of mobile connections.
