NADRA Updates CNIC Rules for First-Time Applicants, Makes Signature Optional
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced updated rules for the issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs), bringing changes to the requirements for first-time applicants.
Under the new guidelines, individuals applying for a CNIC for the first time will no longer be required to provide a signature at the time of registration.
New Procedure for Signature Field
According to NADRA officials, if an applicant does not provide a signature, the system will automatically enter “NA” in the signature field on the CNIC.
The authority also clarified that thumb impressions or other marks will not be printed as a replacement for signatures on identity cards. Similarly, thumbprint images will not be used due to concerns about misuse and forgery.
Awareness Campaign for Applicants
NADRA has launched an awareness campaign, particularly targeting illiterate applicants and individuals who are unable to provide signatures.
The authority also advised users applying through the mobile application not to upload thumbprint images during the application process.
Officials added that anyone wishing to add or update their signature on a CNIC in the future will need to submit a formal correction request.
The new measures have been introduced to simplify the registration process, improve efficiency, and enhance transparency in identity documentation across Pakistan.
