7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert in Japan’s Kumamoto Region

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu Island on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert for several coastal areas.

Officials urged residents in affected regions to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions where necessary.

Tsunami Alert Issued for Multiple Areas

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a tsunami alert was issued for parts of Kyushu, including:

  • Kumamoto
  • Nagasaki
  • Kagoshima
  • Fukuoka
  • Saga
  • Oita

The agency warned that tsunami waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) could affect some coastal areas.

Rail Services Suspended

Following the earthquake, JR Kyushu temporarily suspended several train services, including bullet train operations, as safety inspections were carried out.

Authorities continue to monitor transportation infrastructure while assessing the impact of the earthquake.

Authorities Urge Public to Stay Away from Coast

The Japan Meteorological Agency advised residents to avoid coastal areas until the tsunami alert is officially lifted.

Officials warned that the sea could remain hazardous and urged the public not to enter the water or approach the shoreline during the advisory period.

Emergency officials also cautioned that aftershocks may continue, asking residents to remain vigilant.

Reminder of the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes

The latest earthquake occurred nearly a decade after the devastating 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, which caused widespread damage and significant loss of life in the region.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
