UK Removes Pakistan from Air Safety List, Opening Door for Direct Flights
In a major breakthrough for aviation and international travel, the United Kingdom has officially removed Pakistan from its Air Safety List, paving the way for Pakistani airlines to apply for direct flight operations to the UK.
Pakistani Airlines Cleared to Apply for UK Operations
The announcement was made by the UK’s Air Safety Committee on Wednesday, following a detailed technical review. While Pakistani carriers are now eligible to apply, each airline must still undergo a separate approval process with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to begin operations.
Why This Matters
This long-anticipated move follows years of collaboration between the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and UK aviation experts. Pakistan was added to the Air Safety List in 2021 due to safety-related concerns. Officials have now confirmed that sufficient progress has been made to meet international safety standards.
“I’m grateful to aviation experts in the UK and Pakistan for their collaborative work to drive improvements,” said British High Commissioner Jane Marriott. “While it will take time for flights to resume, once the logistics are in place, I look forward to using a Pakistani carrier when visiting family and friends.”
Impact on Travel and Trade
The decision is expected to significantly benefit over 1.6 million British residents of Pakistani heritage, making it easier to visit family and friends in Pakistan. It will also improve convenience for British nationals traveling to Pakistan for business or tourism.
In addition, this move could boost UK-Pakistan trade relations, with bilateral trade already valued at £4.7 billion, making the UK Pakistan’s third-largest trading partner.
What’s Next?
Although Pakistani airlines are now eligible to apply, resuming direct flights will take time, as each carrier must fulfill all technical, operational, and safety requirements before receiving final clearance.
