This Instagram Glitch Turned Everyone’s Friends into AI

Instagram Glitch Labels Contact Lists as “AI,” Causing Widespread Confusion

A technical issue on Instagram caused confusion among users on Saturday after contact lists were mistakenly labeled as “AI.” The unexpected glitch made it difficult for users to recognize or contact their friends, leading to complaints across social media platforms.

Friend Lists Temporarily Disrupted

The issue was first reported on Reddit, where several users shared screenshots showing that their entire Instagram contact lists had been renamed as “AI.” Although profile pictures remained visible, the incorrect labeling affected basic features, such as sending messages or sharing videos. As a workaround, some users resorted to copying and pasting links manually to communicate.

One frustrated user wrote, “I can’t find any of my friends. They’re all just called AI. This is ridiculous.” Others called the app “unusable” during the glitch.

Possible Link to Internal AI Testing

Adding to the speculation, users also received a separate in-app notification stating: “AI chats are not yet available to everyone.” This led many to believe that the issue may have stemmed from internal testing of upcoming AI features by Instagram’s parent company, Meta.

As of Saturday morning, Meta had not issued an official statement addressing the cause of the glitch or whether it was connected to future AI updates. No timeline for resolution was provided, although some users reported their contact lists returned to normal later in the day.

Concerns About AI Transparency

This is not the first time Instagram’s use of artificial intelligence has sparked user concerns. In June, some users reported account bans without explanation, raising questions about how automated moderation tools are being deployed.

Ethan Zhao, a software engineer based in Palo Alto, commented, “There’s a growing trust deficit when AI tools are introduced without proper communication. When those systems malfunction, users feel blindsided and helpless.”

Calls for Better Testing and Communication

Digital rights advocates are now urging Meta to prioritize thorough testing and transparent communication before introducing any new AI-powered features. They warn that inadequate rollout procedures can harm user experience and reduce trust in the platform.

While the issue appears to be gradually resolving for some users, others continue to face disruptions. Users are encouraged to keep the app updated and monitor official channels for further announcements.
