Olympic Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Accuses BFI Official of Inappropriate Behavior
New Delhi: Olympic medallist and world champion boxer Lovlina Borgohain has filed a formal complaint alleging inappropriate and disrespectful behavior by a senior official of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). The matter is now under investigation by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and other relevant authorities.
Allegations Against BFI Official
In a letter addressed to the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India (SAI), BFI, IOA, and TOPS, Lovlina detailed an incident that occurred during a virtual meeting on July 8, 2025. She claims that the official, Col (Retd) Arun Malik, spoke to her in a harsh tone, saying:
“Shut up, lower your head, and do as we say.”
Lovlina said the incident made her feel disrespected and humiliated, especially as it happened in front of other senior officials. She expressed concern over the way women athletes are treated and called for a more respectful and supportive environment in Indian sports.
What Was the Meeting About?
The meeting was reportedly held to discuss Lovlina’s upcoming training plans and her request to include her coach Pranamika Boro in her overseas training program. Lovlina says her request was dismissed without proper consideration by the official.
Official Response and Investigation
Col Malik has denied the allegations, stating that the meeting was conducted professionally and that recordings can be reviewed. He expressed his respect for Lovlina’s achievements and maintained that all policies were followed appropriately.
In response to the complaint, the IOA has formed a three-member inquiry panel, which includes:
-
Nachhatar Singh Johal, CEO of TOPS
-
Sharath Kamal, Olympian
-
A female legal expert
The SAI is also conducting a separate review, led by Ritu Pathik, to ensure transparency and fairness.
What’s Next?
Lovlina has chosen not to make further public statements and says she is confident that the proper authorities will investigate the matter thoroughly. The final report is expected in the coming weeks.
