Messi’s Retirement Leaves Argentina Preparing for a New Era

Argentina are entering a new chapter following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football, with the national team now facing the challenge of rebuilding after one of the most successful periods in its history.
Messi officially stepped away from international duty after more than two decades representing Argentina. During his career, he helped the team secure three major international trophies, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 39-year-old played his final competitive international match in Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final in July.
Argentina Faces Major Changes
Messi’s departure comes at a time when several experienced members of the squad are also approaching the later stages of their international careers.
Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi, 38, has already retired from international football following the World Cup final. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has also indicated that he could consider his future, while midfielder Leandro Paredes has faced uncertainty after receiving a 10-match FIFA suspension following the final.
Rodrigo De Paul’s international future has also been linked with Messi’s departure.
With several senior players potentially leaving, Argentina will need to gradually introduce younger talent into the national team.
Scaloni’s Future Remains Uncertain
Another major question concerns head coach Lionel Scaloni, who has guided Argentina through its most successful period in recent decades.
Scaloni took charge in 2018 and led Argentina to the 2021 Copa America title, ending the country’s long wait for a major international trophy. His team then won the 2022 World Cup and added another Copa America title.
His current contract is due to expire in December. Although he had reportedly been expected to continue through 2030, Scaloni has expressed uncertainty about his future following the World Cup final.
The coach said he would honour his contract before deciding on his next step.
Argentina Still Has Strong Young Talent
Despite Messi’s retirement, Argentina still has a strong group of established players and emerging stars.
Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero have become important options in central defence, while Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister are key figures in midfield.
Messi’s departure could also provide greater opportunities for forwards such as Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez to take on larger roles in the team.
Young players are also making their presence felt. Nico Paz has attracted attention with his performances, while Giuliano Simeone has impressed when given opportunities.
Real Madrid winger Franco Mastantuono is another promising prospect. Despite being only 19, he has already made four appearances for Argentina.
Messi Confident About Argentina’s Future
Messi has expressed optimism about the next generation of Argentine footballers and believes younger players deserve opportunities to establish themselves.
Argentina also showed promise at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile last year, reaching the final before finishing as runners-up.
The team will now look toward the 2028 Copa America, where Argentina will aim to defend its title and potentially win the competition for a third consecutive time.
Argentina will also automatically qualify for the 2030 World Cup because the country is scheduled to host one of the tournament’s matches alongside other South American nations.
Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, having scored 125 goals in 207 appearances.
His departure marks the end of a remarkable era, but Argentina has a new generation of players ready to take on greater responsibilities.
