Leandro Paredes Unsure About Argentina Future After Suspension and Messi Exit

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has admitted that his future with the national team is uncertain following a 10-match suspension and Lionel Messi’s decision to retire from international football.
The 32-year-old midfielder was suspended in August for his involvement in the confrontation that followed Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Paredes received the lengthy ban after pushing Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground at the final whistle, when Spain’s substitutes entered the pitch to celebrate their victory.
Paredes Facing Long International Ban
Paredes was handed a 10-match suspension and also fined $90,000. Argentina teammate Nahuel Molina was involved in the incident as well and received a separate punishment.
Speaking to Argentine media on Tuesday, Paredes said the suspension would make it difficult for him to continue his international career in the same way.
He added that Messi’s retirement was another major factor he would need to consider before making a decision about his future.
Paredes said he had not yet spoken with Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni about the situation but expected the two to discuss his plans.
Messi’s Absence Leaves Major Void
Paredes also reflected on Messi’s departure from international football and the impact it will have on Argentina’s squad.
The midfielder praised Messi’s career and said the captain’s achievements and determination would leave a lasting legacy with the national team.
Paredes revealed that Argentina’s players had already discussed the possibility that the 2026 World Cup final could be Messi’s final international appearance.
However, he acknowledged that the reality of Messi stepping away from the national team was still difficult for the players to fully accept.

With Messi no longer part of the national team and Paredes facing a lengthy suspension, Argentina could enter its next international cycle with several changes to its squad.
