Tremors felt in Peshawar, Mansehra, Islamabad after 5.4-magnitude quake hits eastern Afghanistan

Earthquake Tremors Felt in Pakistan After Strong Quake in Afghanistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday confirmed that earthquake tremors were felt in Peshawar, Mansehra, Islamabad, Abbottabad, and Swat after another quake struck eastern Afghanistan.

According to PMD, the earthquake measured 5.4 in magnitude and occurred at 5:30 pm in southeastern Afghanistan at a depth of 22 km. Tremors were widely felt across northern Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at 5.2 magnitude, with the epicenter located 34 km northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province.

⚠️ Series of Quakes in the Region
The epicenter was close to the site where a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck late Sunday, devastating remote mountainous areas near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. According to Afghan officials, aftershocks are continuing but so far no fresh casualties have been reported.

📊 Casualties Update

  • At least 1,411 people lost their lives and more than 3,124 were injured in Kunar province due to Sunday’s quake.

  • In neighbouring Nangarhar province, a dozen deaths and hundreds of injuries were also confirmed.

🌍 Impact on Afghanistan
Afghanistan remains one of the world’s poorest nations and has struggled with reduced international aid since 2021. Relief operations are ongoing, but the United Nations has warned that hundreds of thousands of people could be affected by the devastation.

Earlier in the day, the PMD also reported three minor quakes in southeastern Afghanistan, including a 4.0-magnitude tremor at 2:50 pm.
