Former Pakistan women’s cricket captain and commentator Sana Mir has responded to recent criticism surrounding her on-air remarks, calling the controversy “unfortunate and unnecessary.”

In a statement, Sana Mir expressed disappointment at what she described as a misrepresentation of her words.

“It is sad to see matters being exaggerated in such a way. Sportspeople already face immense pressure, and it is unfortunate that I am forced to issue a public clarification on this,” she said.

Background of the Controversy

The matter arose during her commentary at the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup, when Sana Mir highlighted the hometown of cricketer Natalia Pervaiz. The comments were later amplified on social media, leading to widespread debate and calls from some quarters for her removal.

Interestingly, shortly after the incident, updates were made to Natalia Pervaiz’s player profile on a popular cricket statistics website, reflecting changes in how her hometown was listed.

Sana Mir’s Clarification

The former skipper, who is also an ICC Hall of Fame inductee, clarified that her remarks were intended to showcase the inspiring journey of the player.

“As commentators, it is our role to tell stories about where players come from and the challenges they have overcome. I also mentioned players from other regions in the same context, but this matter has been unnecessarily politicized,” she explained.

She emphasized that her comments were made in good faith and carried no negative intent.

A Voice for Unity

Since her retirement, Sana Mir has become a respected figure in cricket broadcasting. She urged fans to view the game as a unifying force rather than a platform for division.

“Cricket should remain a source of unity, not controversy,” she said.

At 39, Sana Mir continues to be a prominent voice in international cricket, both for her past achievements as Pakistan’s captain and her growing reputation as a broadcaster.
