Pakistan Extends Ban on Indian Flights as Airspace Restriction Nears One Year
The restriction on Indian aircraft using Pakistan airspace is set to complete one year, as authorities have extended the ban for another month through a fresh Notice to Airmen (NOTAM).
According to the Pakistan Airports Authority, all Indian-registered, leased, commercial, and military aircraft will remain barred from Pakistani airspace until May 24, 2026.
The restriction, first imposed on April 24, 2025, has now been in place for nearly a year. During this period, flights between India and several international destinations have been rerouted, increasing travel time and operational costs for airlines.
The airspace closure was initially introduced amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India, following diplomatic and security developments in the region. India had also imposed similar restrictions on Pakistani aircraft shortly after.
Aviation analysts note that such airspace closures can significantly impact flight schedules, fuel consumption, and airline profitability, particularly on long-haul international routes.
Pakistan has previously enforced similar airspace restrictions during past periods of heightened tensions, including regional conflicts, which also affected aviation routes across South Asia.
Officials have not indicated when the restriction might be lifted, and the situation remains subject to ongoing diplomatic and security considerations.
