Govt Approves 5G Trials in Gilgit Baltistan

The federal government has approved the launch of 5G trials in Gilgit Baltistan, marking an important step toward expanding next-generation mobile connectivity in the region.

The decision follows ongoing efforts by local authorities to be included in the national 5G rollout, which had earlier progressed without Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

Officials stated that the development came after continued coordination between regional leadership, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and the Ministry of IT, highlighting the need to improve digital connectivity in the area.

A formal policy summary outlining the framework for 5G trials was prepared and approved by the Ministry of Law and Justice and the Ministry of IT, before receiving final clearance from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The proposal was later presented to the Gilgit Baltistan Council, where it was approved along with consent from the Governor.

Following these approvals, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued the necessary directives, allowing telecom operators to begin 5G trials in the region.

The trials are expected to support future planning for 5G spectrum allocation and help integrate Gilgit Baltistan into the broader national rollout of advanced mobile services.
