Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, Lenovo and Other Smartphone Makers Announce Initiative to Improve Android Performance

Several major smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, and Lenovo, have announced a joint initiative aimed at improving overall Android device performance.

The collaboration, formed under the Gold Standard Alliance, focuses on addressing common smartphone issues such as system lag, overheating, background app crashes, and inconsistent memory management across Android devices.

According to the group, the initiative will introduce a unified memory management standard designed to help developers optimize apps more efficiently across different devices and Android versions.

The framework is expected to align with upcoming changes in Android 17 and aims to create a more consistent user experience regardless of device brand, hardware configuration, or software customization.

The alliance stated that increasing software complexity and hardware diversity across Android devices has made application optimization more challenging for developers. This can sometimes lead to performance issues such as higher memory usage, slower performance, or apps closing in the background.

To address these challenges, the initiative includes a three-part framework. It will define standardized memory usage guidelines for applications, introduce a notification system to alert apps when memory resources are low, and implement contextual rules to manage how these alerts are triggered.

Developers will be given a timeline until June 30, 2026, to update their applications in accordance with the new standards. Member companies will also provide documentation and technical support during the transition period.

The Gold Standard Alliance, established in 2021 as a non-profit industry group, includes several major technology companies and operates a certification program for apps that meet performance and stability standards across participating platforms.

The initiative is expected to support more efficient app performance and improve the overall stability of Android devices in the long term.
