The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has informed a parliamentary committee that 5G services have been activated in 22 cities across the country.
The update was shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, chaired by Syed Amin Ul Haque.
PTA officials said that 5G has been initially deployed in selected sectors of Islamabad, where early speed tests in Sector F-8 recorded internet speeds of around 100 Mbps. They added that the upcoming spectrum auction is expected to further improve mobile internet performance and enhance overall 4G speeds.
During the meeting, lawmakers raised concerns over the quality of telecom services and questioned whether new technologies alone would resolve ongoing connectivity issues. Members stressed the need for stronger service standards and improved customer support from telecom operators.
PTA officials acknowledged that frequent electricity outages continue to impact mobile networks in several areas. They also noted that prolonged load-shedding is affecting service reliability, particularly in regions facing extended power cuts.
The committee further discussed issues related to telecom customer service, urging operators to improve helpline capacity and response times. Members also called for stricter regulatory action against companies failing to meet service quality standards.
The meeting also reviewed matters linked to recent telecom mergers and outstanding financial issues, with officials from relevant departments expected to provide further details in the next session.
