PKLI Seeks Guinness World Record After Performing 10 Liver Transplants in Under 24 Hours

The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI) has applied for recognition from Guinness World Records after successfully completing 10 liver transplant procedures in 23 hours and 20 minutes.

According to institute officials, the complex series of surgeries included a transplant performed on a nine-month-old child. The organization has submitted detailed medical records and supporting documentation for verification, and a Guinness World Records team may also visit for evaluation.

Officials said the procedures were carried out by a multidisciplinary team of around 120 healthcare professionals, including surgeons, anesthetists, pediatric specialists, nurses, and support staff.

The transplants included advanced medical techniques such as domino liver transplants and Auxiliary Partial Orthotopic Liver Transplants (APOLT). These methods allowed multiple patients, including children and adults, to benefit from a limited number of donor organs.

Medical experts explained that these approaches help maximize the use of available donor organs, particularly in complex cases involving rare metabolic conditions.

PKLI officials stated that all patients have been discharged after successful recovery and are now with their families.

Healthcare leaders described the achievement as an important milestone in transplant medicine, highlighting its potential to expand treatment options for patients with severe liver diseases.

Punjab government representatives also praised the medical team, calling the development a significant step for Pakistan’s healthcare sector and international medical recognition.

Since its establishment, PKLI has performed over a thousand liver and kidney transplants, along with bone marrow transplants, treating patients from across the country and abroad.
