WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup 2026/2027 Format Explained and Path to LA28 Olympics
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s Softball World Cup 2026/2027 will follow a two-stage format, combining global participation with high-level competition as teams compete for the world title and Olympic qualification opportunities for Los Angeles 2028.
The tournament also carries added importance, as results will contribute to world ranking points and the overall qualification pathway for the LA28 Olympic Games.
Group Stage Structure
The Group Stage will feature three separate groups of six teams each, hosted in different locations:
- Prague, Czechia
- Lima, Peru
- Oklahoma City, USA
Each group will follow a round-robin format, where every team plays against all other teams in its group. Based on standings, teams will progress to the next phase, with top performers advancing toward qualification for the Finals.
The format is designed to ensure competitive balance, with additional play-off opportunities allowing teams finishing outside the top positions to remain in contention.
All Group Stage matches will be streamed on WBSC’s official digital platform, GameTime.
Road to the Finals 2027
At the conclusion of the Group Stage, six teams will qualify directly for the Finals. Two additional Wild Card places will be awarded based on specific criteria, including host nation status, rankings, and performance in the group stage.
The Finals will take place in April 2027 at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe, Australia, featuring eight teams in total.
Finals Format
The Finals will begin with two groups of four teams each, followed by a Super Round and medal games. The top teams from each group will advance to compete for the championship, with the final standings determining gold, silver, and bronze medal winners.
Olympic Qualification Path
The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup 2026/2027 will also serve as a key qualification event for the LA28 Olympic Games.
- USA has already qualified as the host nation
- One direct Olympic spot will be awarded at the World Cup Finals
- Three additional places will be decided through continental qualifiers (Americas, Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa)
- The final spot will be determined through a global qualification event in 2028
