Government Plans Cashless Toll Collection on Major Motorways

ISLAMABAD — The federal government has announced plans to accelerate the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and introduce cashless electronic toll collection on major motorways and highways across Pakistan.

The directive was issued by Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan during a review meeting at the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters.

Focus on Smart Transport Systems

According to officials, the initiative aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and enhance overall travel efficiency on the country’s road network.

As part of the plan, authorities have been instructed to expand the ITS programme and include the M-2 Motorway in the project. The system will integrate cameras, communication networks, and security infrastructure under a unified technological framework.

Electronic Tolling and Security Integration

The proposed free-flow electronic toll collection system is expected to allow motorists to pay tolls digitally, reducing waiting times and improving convenience for commuters.

Officials also plan to link the electronic tolling network with the Safe City system to support traffic management and strengthen coordination with law enforcement agencies.

Improved Facilities for Travelers

The minister directed authorities to ensure the availability of Motorway Police personnel at service areas across the motorway network and to maintain consistent facilities for road users.

In addition, plans include deploying Rescue 1122 teams, fire response units, and fully equipped ambulances at selected service areas along motorways and national highways to enhance emergency response capabilities.

Officials said the measures are part of broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s transport infrastructure and improve safety and convenience for travelers.
