Belgium and Egypt Share Points in FIFA World Cup Group G Opener
Belgium and Egypt played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match of the FIFA World Cup on Monday, earning a point each in a closely contested encounter in Seattle.
Egypt made a strong start and took the lead in the first half through Emam Ashour. The midfielder found the net with a well-placed strike that gave Egypt an early advantage.
Both teams created opportunities throughout the match, with Belgium increasing the pressure after the break. Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne came close to equalizing early in the second half when his free-kick struck the post.
Egypt also had chances to extend their lead, with captain Mohamed Salah involved in several attacking moves. However, Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made important saves to keep his side in the game.
Belgium found their equalizer in the 65th minute shortly after the introduction of substitute Romelu Lukaku. A dangerous ball into the penalty area resulted in an own goal by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany, bringing the score level at 1-1.
The final stages of the match saw both teams searching for a winning goal, but neither side was able to break the deadlock.
The draw leaves Group G finely balanced as both teams continue their World Cup campaigns. Egypt will now look ahead to matches against Iran and New Zealand, while Belgium will aim to build on its performance in upcoming fixtures.
