A hospital in Milan is testing a humanoid robot named “Alter-Ego”, designed to support healthcare staff by performing simple patient-care tasks and improving communication in hospital wards.

The 1.2-metre-tall robot is capable of interacting with patients, providing basic assistance such as delivering water, and helping guide individuals to different areas of the hospital. It can also act as a remote interface for doctors.

In one trial, a patient at the Maugeri Hospital entered pain details through a screen attached to the robot, which then transmitted the information directly to medical staff.

The robot has been undergoing trials since April in a department treating patients with neurodegenerative conditions, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Hospital staff say the initial response from patients has been positive, with the robot designed to encourage interaction through its movements and facial expressions.

Researchers involved in the project say the goal is to better understand how robotic systems can safely support healthcare workers without replacing human care, particularly in sensitive medical environments.

They also suggest that future versions of the technology could potentially assist patients in home care settings, depending on further testing and development.
