Inquiry Finds Irregularities in Karachi BRT Yellow Line Project Payments

A report by the Sindh Chief Minister’s Inspection Team has identified financial irregularities in the Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Yellow Line project, involving alleged advance payments to contractors without proper authorization.

According to the inquiry findings, irregular payments worth approximately Rs. 8.5 billion were flagged during a preliminary investigation ordered by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. The probe examined financial management practices within the Transport Department.

The inspection team, led by Bilal Memon, stated that certain officials allegedly bypassed established financial procedures and approval mechanisms while processing payments to contractors.

The report also highlighted concerns related to contract management, tax deductions, and compliance with financial regulations. It warned that such actions could pose risks to project funding arrangements and institutional agreements.

Investigators further recommended that the matter be reviewed by relevant authorities, noting that a criminal investigation has already been initiated. An anti-corruption case has also reportedly been registered for further legal proceedings.

The inquiry concluded that disciplinary and legal action may be considered based on the findings, as the matter continues under official review.

The BRT Yellow Line project remains under development as authorities assess the situation and its impact on ongoing work and funding.
