Punjab to Introduce AI as a Compulsory Subject in Primary Schools
Punjab is set to become the first province in Pakistan to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a compulsory subject for primary school students.
The Punjab Education Department has approved the inclusion of AI in the curriculum for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The new subject is expected to be introduced from the 2027-28 academic year.
According to education officials, AI will be taught as a standalone subject with dedicated classroom instruction, similar to other core subjects. Students will also be assessed through the formal examination system, making AI an essential part of their academic studies.
The initiative aims to equip students with an early understanding of emerging technologies and prepare them for a rapidly evolving digital world.
Officials believe that introducing AI concepts at the primary level can help develop critical thinking, creativity, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities among young learners.
The move is part of broader efforts to modernize the education system and ensure that students gain exposure to technological advancements from an early age.
Education authorities have stated that the proposed curriculum will be designed to match the learning needs and age groups of primary school students, focusing on basic concepts and practical understanding.
The final approval for the AI curriculum is expected to be reviewed during an upcoming meeting of the Board of Governors of the Punjab Information Technology Academy Council (PITAC).
