A Scooter That Became a Global Symbol

Introduced by Italian manufacturer Piaggio in 1946, the Vespa quickly became a practical and affordable mode of transportation during Italy’s post-World War II recovery.

Its distinctive design, ease of use and stylish appearance helped it gain popularity not only in Italy but also across Europe and many other parts of the world.

Over the decades, the Vespa has become one of Italy’s best-known design icons, representing both mobility and classic Italian style.

Famous Role in Film and Popular Culture

The Vespa gained worldwide recognition after appearing in the classic 1953 film Roman Holiday, starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.

Since then, the scooter has been featured in numerous films, advertisements and travel campaigns, making it a lasting symbol of Italian culture and tourism.

Nearly 20 Million Scooters Sold Worldwide

According to company figures, the Vespa has remained in continuous production for 80 years and has undergone around 160 design updates.

Nearly 20 million Vespa scooters have been sold globally since 1946, with more than two million sold during the past decade alone.

Today, Vespa is available in around 100 countries, with strong markets across Europe and Southeast Asia. Production currently takes place at manufacturing facilities in Italy, Vietnam and India.

Rome Marks a Historic Milestone

The anniversary celebrations brought together vintage scooter collectors, modern Vespa owners and visitors from around the world, highlighting the enduring appeal of a vehicle that has remained part of Italian life for eight decades.

The festival combined history, culture and motorsport, celebrating a scooter that continues to attract new generations while preserving its classic identity.
