Mexico End 40-Year FIFA World Cup Knockout Wait With Convincing Win Over Ecuador

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Mexico booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Ecuador 2-0 in a confident performance at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Tuesday.

The knockout match was delayed by an hour due to severe weather, but once play began, the tournament co-hosts quickly took control with an energetic attacking display.

Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after driving into the penalty area and firing a powerful finish beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez. The forward later provided the assist for Raul Jimenez, who doubled Mexico’s lead with a superb strike into the top corner before halftime.

Ecuador attempted to respond after the break, making several tactical changes in search of a comeback. However, Mexico remained organized defensively and continued to create the better scoring opportunities.

The victory ends Mexico’s 40-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win, with their previous success at this stage coming when they hosted the tournament in 1986.

Mexico also extended their impressive record at Estadio Azteca, remaining unbeaten in their last 10 FIFA World Cup matches at the historic venue.

The hosts advanced to the Round of 16 after an outstanding group-stage campaign, winning all three of their matches without conceding a goal. Ecuador, meanwhile, reached the knockout stage after finishing third in their group, having scored only twice during the group phase.

Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora made history by becoming the second-youngest player to start a FIFA World Cup knockout match, behind Brazilian legend Pele, who achieved the feat in 1958.

Mexico created several early chances, with Jimenez and Mora both threatening before Quinones broke the deadlock midway through the first half. The home side continued to dominate possession and doubled their advantage through Jimenez after another excellent contribution from Quinones.

Ecuador enjoyed a few promising moments, but goalkeeper Raul Rangel produced key saves to preserve Mexico’s clean sheet. Substitute Kevin Rodriguez came close late in the second half, but Ecuador were unable to find a breakthrough.

The visitors’ difficult evening ended on a disappointing note when defender Piero Hincapie received a red card during stoppage time following an altercation.

Mexico will now prepare for a Round of 16 showdown against England after the Three Lions’ comeback victory over Congo. The match will once again be played at Estadio Azteca before the remainder of the tournament moves to the United States for the quarter-finals and beyond.

With home support behind them and confidence growing, Mexico will aim to continue their impressive World Cup campaign and extend their memorable run on football’s biggest stage.
