Reports Suggest Joe Root Could Return as England Test Captain

England could be set for a leadership reshuffle in Test cricket, with reports suggesting that Joe Root is the leading candidate to return as Test captain following recent changes within the national team’s management.
The reported changes come after the departures of Ben Stokes as Test captain and Brendon McCullum as England’s Test head coach. McCullum is expected to continue overseeing England’s white-ball teams through the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
England Preparing for Pakistan Test Series
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is expected to finalize its Test leadership before England’s upcoming three-match home Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin on August 19 at Headingley.
The remaining matches are due to be played at Lord’s and Edgbaston.
Joe Root Reportedly Leading the Race
According to reports, Joe Root has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the Test captaincy once again.
Root previously captained England in 65 Test matches between 2017 and 2022, leading the team to 27 victories, the highest number of Test wins by an England captain.
Although Root stepped down from the role in 2022 and had previously indicated he was not seeking a return to the position, reports suggest he is now being considered because of his experience and familiarity with the team.
Other Captaincy Options
England vice-captain Harry Brook has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. However, reports indicate that his responsibilities as the team’s white-ball captain and other recent developments may reduce the likelihood of an immediate appointment.
Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell is regarded as a promising future leadership option, although reports suggest the 22-year-old is not yet being considered for the role on a full-time basis.
Interim Coach Could Be Appointed
Reports also indicate that Marcus Trescothick is the leading candidate to serve as interim Test head coach during the Pakistan series.
The temporary appointment would give the ECB additional time to complete the recruitment process for a permanent head coach before England’s scheduled tour of South Africa later this year.
Among the names linked with the permanent coaching position are Richard Dawson, Stephen Fleming, Jonathan Trott, Tom Moody, and Kumar Sangakkara.
ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould has also stated that the next England Test coach does not necessarily have to be English, allowing the board to consider both domestic and international candidates.
Official Announcement Still Awaited
The ECB has not yet confirmed the appointments. However, reports suggest that the combination of Joe Root as Test captain and Marcus Trescothick as interim coach is currently viewed as the most likely short-term arrangement ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan.
Further confirmation is expected from the ECB once the selection process is complete.
