Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
French football captain Kylian Mbappe has strongly condemned racist remarks made by a Paraguayan senator following France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup quarter-final race.
Mbappe scored the winning goal from the penalty spot during the match in Philadelphia, helping France advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Following the game, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla posted comments on social media that drew widespread criticism for their offensive and discriminatory nature.
In response, Mbappe issued a public statement criticizing the remarks and expressing support for the Paraguayan national team.
He said the comments did not represent the values of Paraguay or the efforts of its players, who had earned respect for their performances during the tournament. Mbappe also emphasized the importance of standing against racism and hate speech.
French Football Federation to Take Legal Action
The French Football Federation (FFF) announced that it intends to file a criminal complaint over the senator’s remarks, describing them as unacceptable and calling for appropriate legal action.
The federation stated that discriminatory language has no place in football or society and reaffirmed its support for the French national team.
Paraguay Distances Itself From the Remarks
The Government of Paraguay also rejected the senator’s comments, stating that they reflected her personal views and did not represent the position of the government or the people of Paraguay.
Paraguayan officials reiterated their commitment to respect, human dignity, and peaceful coexistence.
The president of Paraguay’s National Congress also condemned the remarks, saying racism and messages promoting hatred or violence do not reflect the country’s values. He added that politics and sport should remain separate.
International Support for Mbappe
French President Emmanuel Macron publicly expressed his support for Mbappe, praising his stand against racism and emphasizing the importance of dignity, respect, and equality.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also condemned the incident, stating that football must continue to unite people and that the global football community stands against racism in all forms.
The incident has prompted widespread calls from football authorities and public officials for greater efforts to combat discrimination and promote respect both on and off the field.
