France booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a thrilling quarter-final on Thursday, with Kylian Mbappe once again delivering a match-winning performance.

The French superstar endured an early setback when his first-half penalty was comfortably saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. However, Mbappe responded in style after the break, scoring a superb curling goal in the 60th minute to put France ahead.

The goal marked Mbappe’s eighth of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot.

France sealed the victory six minutes later when Mbappe set up Ousmane Dembele, who calmly finished to double the lead. The result sends Didier Deschamps’ side into the last four, where they will meet either Spain or Belgium in Dallas.

France Continue Impressive World Cup Run

The 2018 world champions and 2022 runners-up have once again shown their consistency on football’s biggest stage. France have now reached another World Cup semi-final while keeping three consecutive clean sheets in the knockout rounds.

Coach Didier Deschamps is aiming to guide his team to a third straight World Cup final before stepping down after the tournament.

Mbappe Chasing More Records

Although his penalty was denied, Mbappe remained the standout player on the pitch. His latest goal took his remarkable World Cup tally to 20 goals in just 20 appearances, leaving him only one goal behind Lionel Messi’s overall World Cup record of 21.

The Real Madrid forward has been in outstanding form throughout the competition, consistently making the difference for France in crucial matches.

Morocco’s Memorable Campaign Ends

Morocco enjoyed strong support from the crowd and fought hard throughout the contest but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. The absence of injured midfielder Ismael Saibari limited their attacking threat against a disciplined French defence.

Despite the defeat, Morocco’s young squad showed plenty of promise during the tournament. Talented players, including Ayyoub Bouaddi, highlighted the team’s bright future as the country prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

Match Summary

France controlled much of the game and finally broke the deadlock through Mbappe’s brilliant finish shortly after halftime. Dembele’s composed strike soon after secured a comfortable victory, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced several excellent saves to keep the score respectable.

France will now turn their attention to the semi-finals as they continue their quest for another FIFA World Cup title.
