Japan Wins First-Ever World Collegiate Baseball Championship

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Japan claimed the title at the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship after defeating the United States 6-3 in an exciting 11-inning final at Taichung Intercontinental Stadium.

The victory came after the United States entered the championship game unbeaten, having previously defeated Japan during the tournament’s opening round.

Thrilling Championship Final

The United States took an early lead in the third inning when designated hitter Gavin Kelly delivered a two-run single.

Starting pitcher Tomas Valincius gave Team USA a strong performance, striking out six batters over four innings, while reliever Aidan King added two scoreless innings. Strong defensive play helped the Americans protect their advantage for much of the game.

Japan fought back in the seventh inning, capitalizing on defensive errors to score its first run. Designated hitter Kazuki Inoue then doubled before scoring the tying run on a hit from pinch hitter Yuzuki Nakayama, leveling the game at 2-2.

Japan Secures Victory in Extra Innings

With the score tied after nine innings, both teams scored once in the 10th under the tournament’s international tiebreaker rule.

Japan took control in the top of the 11th inning by scoring three runs, aided by a defensive error and an RBI single from catcher Keiya Nishino.

In the bottom of the inning, the United States loaded the bases with one out, but Japanese left-handed reliever Shisei Fujimoto closed out the game with a strikeout and a popout to secure the championship.

Right-handed pitcher Futo Kakuta earned the win after delivering 2.1 effective innings in relief.

Chinese Taipei Finishes Third

In the third-place playoff, Chinese Taipei defeated Korea by a score of 1-0 to finish third in the tournament standings.

Tournament to Continue Annually

The World Collegiate Baseball Championship was established through a partnership between USA Baseball, the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA), and the Japan University Baseball Federation (JUBF).

Under the tournament format, the three founding organizations will participate every year, while the host nation will invite a fourth team as a wild-card entry.

The next edition of the championship will be held in 2027 at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, with Japan scheduled to host the tournament in 2028. Additional details, including tournament dates and future wild-card participants, will be announced by the organizing federations at a later stage.
