Lahore Introduces New Safety Guidelines for Construction and Demolition Projects
Lahore: The Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL) has introduced updated safety guidelines for construction and demolition activities across the city to improve public safety, reduce dust pollution, and ensure compliance with building regulations.
The new measures apply to builders, developers, and contractors carrying out construction work within Lahore.
Dust Control Measures Required
According to the new directives, construction and demolition work must include effective dust control arrangements before work begins.
Builders may use methods such as:
- Regular water sprinkling
- Dust suppression systems
- Other approved measures to reduce airborne dust
The guidelines aim to help improve air quality and minimize inconvenience for nearby residents.
Proper Disposal of Construction Material
The MCL has instructed that construction material and debris must not be placed on roads or public streets without prior written approval from the relevant authority.
Contractors are also required to remove debris promptly and ensure roads are cleaned after construction work or whenever directed by civic officials.
Protecting Public Infrastructure
The new rules state that temporary structures, fencing, construction materials, and advertising boards should not obstruct:
- Fire hydrants
- Utility services
- Drainage systems
If temporary obstruction is unavoidable, developers must arrange suitable alternatives with the approval of the concerned authority.
Covering Construction Materials
Builders have also been directed to cover construction materials with protective green sheets to help prevent dust from spreading into surrounding areas.
Any debris or materials placed on public roads must be removed as quickly as possible.
Compliance Monitoring
Building and enforcement inspectors have been instructed to monitor construction sites and ensure compliance with the MCL Building and Zoning Byelaws 2020.
In addition, developers and contractors must display approved building plans and relevant planning permissions at construction sites throughout the duration of the project.
