100-Day Countdown Begins for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games
The countdown to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games has reached the 100-day mark, with young rugby sevens players from around the world preparing to compete in one of the biggest international youth sporting events.
Scheduled to begin with the Opening Ceremony on 31 October 2026, the Games will be the first Olympic event hosted in Africa, marking a significant milestone for international sport.
Rugby Sevens Returns to the Youth Olympics
Rugby sevens will once again feature among the competition sports at the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games.
The rugby tournament is set to begin on 1 November at the Complexe Iba Mar Diop in Dakar, with medal matches scheduled for 2 and 3 November.
Overall, around 2,700 athletes are expected to participate in 153 events across 25 competition sports, along with several engagement sports and educational activities designed to support young athletes’ development.
World Rugby Highlights the Importance of Dakar 2026
World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson said the Youth Olympic Games provide an important platform for the next generation of athletes to develop both on and off the field.
He also noted that hosting the Games in Africa reflects the continued growth of rugby across the continent and offers an opportunity to introduce the sport to new audiences.
A Launchpad for Future Rugby Stars
The Youth Olympic Games have helped launch the careers of several players who later represented their countries at senior international level.
Past participants include athletes from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Argentina, France, Japan, and South Africa, many of whom went on to compete in the Olympic Games, Rugby World Cup Sevens, Commonwealth Games, and the HSBC SVNS Series.
Their success highlights the Youth Olympics as an important stepping stone for young players aiming to reach the highest level of international rugby.
