IFAB Clarifies VAR Rule Following Red Card Incident in Switzerland vs Argentina World Cup Match

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has issued a clarification regarding the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after a controversial red card shown to Switzerland forward Breel Embolo during the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina.
The clarification confirms that the VAR procedure used in the incident was not in line with the current Laws of the Game.
Controversial Red Card
The incident occurred in the 72nd minute, shortly after Switzerland equalized to make the score 1-1.
Embolo was initially involved in a challenge with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes, who was shown a yellow card by the referee.
Following a VAR review, officials determined that Paredes had not committed a foul. The referee then issued a yellow card to Embolo for simulation, resulting in his second yellow card and dismissal from the match.
Argentina went on to win 3-1 after extra time.
IFAB Explains Current VAR Protocol
In a statement released on Monday, IFAB explained that the “mistaken identity” provision in the VAR protocol does not apply to situations like Embolo’s dismissal under the current rules.
According to IFAB, the rule is intended only to correct cases where a referee mistakenly shows a card to the wrong player after a foul has been identified.
The organization noted that expanding the use of the protocol to cover similar situations may be considered in future competitions, but such a change has not yet been adopted.
