Pakistan Expected to Receive Above-Average Monsoon Rainfall, NDMA Briefing Says
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is likely to experience above-normal monsoon rainfall this season, according to a briefing presented to federal ministers at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters.
Officials said the forecast indicates the possibility of heavier-than-average rainfall in several parts of the country, increasing the need for preparedness and coordinated response measures.
Government Reviews Monsoon Preparedness
During the briefing, authorities discussed the potential impact of the ongoing monsoon season and reviewed emergency response plans.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said climate change has increased the risk of flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding in many regions. He added that, on the direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Emergency Response Committee is holding daily meetings to monitor weather conditions and coordinate relief and preparedness efforts.
Regional Rainfall Patterns Expected
Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik said upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan’s northern areas are expected to receive heavier-than-normal rainfall during the season.
He noted that comparatively lower rainfall is forecast for the plains, and authorities are preparing separate response strategies based on the expected weather conditions in different regions.
Focus on Early Warning Systems
Information Minister Atta Tarar said the federal government has been working with provincial authorities to strengthen the country’s early warning system.
He added that timely weather alerts and public awareness initiatives play an important role in helping communities prepare for severe weather and reducing potential risks.
Climate Challenges and Economic Impact
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted the economic impact of climate-related disasters, noting that severe flooding can place significant pressure on infrastructure, agriculture, and the national economy.
Officials emphasized that improving disaster preparedness, strengthening emergency response systems, and increasing public awareness remain key priorities as Pakistan continues to face the effects of changing weather patterns.
