PMD Forecasts Five-Day Rain and Thunderstorm Spell Across Pakistan
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a five-day spell of rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from 16 to 20 June, as a westerly weather system is expected to enter upper regions.
According to the latest advisory, moist air currents from the Arabian Sea are also likely to strengthen weather activity in upper and central parts of Pakistan during this period.
Weather System Expected to Affect Multiple Regions
The PMD says the incoming system may bring intermittent rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall and hail in various areas of the country.
Punjab and Islamabad
Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, Bahawalpur, and several other districts between 16 and 20 June. Some areas may also experience strong winds and hailstorms at isolated locations.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan
Rain-wind and thunderstorm activity is expected across most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Abbottabad, and surrounding regions.
Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are also likely to receive scattered rainfall with occasional heavy spells from 16 to 22 June.
Balochistan
Northern and northeastern parts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Zhob, Khuzdar, and surrounding districts, may experience dust storms and rain-thunderstorm activity during the forecast period.
Sindh
Upper Sindh regions such as Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Khairpur are expected to receive dust storms and light to moderate rain. Karachi may experience dusty conditions with chances of light rain.
Possible Impacts and Advisory
The PMD has warned that strong winds, hailstorms, and lightning may damage weak structures such as billboards, electric poles, and solar panels.
Key concerns include:
- Risk of urban flooding in major cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala
- Possible landslides in hilly regions of KP, GB, and Kashmir
- Disruption to traffic and daily activities due to windstorms and heavy rain
Farmers have been advised to take protective measures for standing crops, while travelers and tourists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
