Saudi Arabia Announces Maritime Security Coalition Amid Rising Regional Tensions
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has announced plans to establish a multinational maritime security coalition aimed at protecting international shipping routes and energy supply lines in the Red Sea region as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
According to Saudi officials, representatives and military leaders from dozens of countries and international organizations participated in a high-level meeting to discuss regional maritime security. Saudi Arabia said it will serve as the founding member and host the coalition’s permanent headquarters.
Coalition Focuses on Maritime Security
Saudi authorities said the proposed coalition is designed to strengthen cooperation in protecting commercial shipping, ensuring freedom of navigation, and safeguarding key trade and energy routes through the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.
Officials also discussed the coalition’s organizational framework, command structure, operational plans, and long-term objectives. Saudi Arabia described the initiative as an open international partnership, welcoming countries that share its goals.
Following the meeting, 14 countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia, issued a joint statement expressing support for the proposed alliance.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Discuss Regional Situation
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held discussions with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the evolving regional situation, including developments in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both leaders also welcomed Jordan’s proposal to convene a meeting of Arab and Islamic countries to discuss the situation in Palestine, particularly East Jerusalem.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
The announcement comes amid increasing military activity across the Middle East.
Recent reports indicate exchanges of strikes involving the United States, Iran, and Iran-aligned groups in different parts of the region. Several countries have also reported incidents affecting military sites, shipping routes, and critical infrastructure.
Egypt confirmed that a drone-related incident caused damage to vessels at the Port of Damietta, prompting officials to launch an investigation. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned that regional tensions continue to pose serious security challenges.
Shipping Security Becomes a Growing Concern
Security concerns in the Red Sea have increased following attacks targeting commercial vessels and maritime infrastructure in recent months. Regional authorities have warned that disruptions to these routes could affect global trade, energy supplies, and international shipping.
Saudi Arabia said the new coalition aims to improve coordination among participating countries and strengthen collective efforts to protect vital maritime corridors used by international commerce.
United States Announces Additional Sanctions
Separately, the United States announced new sanctions targeting networks it says support Iran’s aviation sector. According to US officials, the measures target individuals and organizations in several countries accused of providing logistical or commercial support to sanctioned entities.
Meanwhile, political discussions continue in Washington regarding US military policy in the region as lawmakers debate future authorization for military operations.
The latest developments highlight ongoing diplomatic and security efforts as regional governments seek to protect trade routes while managing rising geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.
