India nears completion of major Himalayan tunnel near China border
India has achieved a key breakthrough in the construction of the strategic Zojila Tunnel, which is being built through the Himalayas to improve year-round connectivity to the Ladakh region near the China border.
According to officials, engineers recently completed the final rock excavation work, marking an important milestone in the long-running infrastructure project aimed at improving transport links in the high-altitude region.
The tunnel is part of a broader effort to strengthen road connectivity between the plains of India and remote border areas that remain cut off during harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall.
Once completed, the tunnel will provide all-weather access between Srinagar and Leh, significantly reducing travel disruptions caused by seasonal closures of the Zojila Pass.
The 13.14-kilometre tunnel is being constructed under extremely challenging weather and terrain conditions. Thousands of workers have been involved in the project over several years, with excavation carried out from both ends of the mountain.
Officials say the project is expected to improve movement of goods, civilians, and security-related logistics throughout the year, especially in winter when roads are often blocked by snow.
The tunnel is also part of a wider infrastructure expansion plan that includes new highways and rail links connecting remote mountainous areas with major cities. Authorities describe it as a key development project for improving regional connectivity and strategic access in the Himalayas.
