Family Seeks Rs. 172 Million Compensation Over Karachi BRT Accident

A family has approached a Karachi court seeking more than Rs. 172 million in compensation following the death of a man in an accident near the Red Line BRT construction area.

The case has been filed against the Sindh government, Malir Cantonment Board, Red Line project officials, the contractor and other parties. A senior civil judge in Malir has issued notices to the respondents and summoned them for September 21.

Family Raises Safety Concerns

According to the family’s lawyer, Usman Farooq, the deceased, identified as Shahid, was travelling home with his wife and child in January when his vehicle collided with a road barrier near Jinnah Avenue.

Shahid died in the accident, while his wife and child reportedly suffered injuries.

The family’s lawyer told the court that the barrier did not have adequate warning signs or reflective markings. He also claimed that the area had insufficient lighting, which could have made the barrier difficult to notice at night.

Compensation Claim Filed in Court

The petition alleges that proper safety arrangements should have been provided around the construction site to ensure the safe movement of traffic.

The lawyer argued that the deceased was the family’s main source of income and that his death had caused significant financial difficulties for the family.

The petitioner has requested the court to direct the respondents to pay Rs. 172.12 million in compensation.

The court will hear the case further after the respondents submit their responses. The allegations made in the petition have yet to be determined by the court.
