Lahore Electric Tram Project Faces Delay After Route Revision

The Punjab government has once again revised the proposed route for Lahore’s electric tram project, leading to a delay in the implementation of the long-awaited public transport system.

According to officials, the updated plan includes routes passing through the Central Business District (CBD), Gulberg, Jail Road and Istanbul Chowk. Canal Road, which was previously part of the project, has been excluded from the revised route.

Reason for Route Change

Authorities stated that the decision to remove Canal Road from the plan was made due to environmental considerations and technical challenges, including concerns about tree cutting and infrastructure limitations.

The revised alignment is aimed at reducing environmental impact while improving feasibility for construction and operations.

Project Background

The electric tram project has undergone multiple changes since its initial announcement. Early proposals included a 27-kilometre “Yellow Line” connecting Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.

Later, alternative plans explored different routes across major commercial areas of Lahore, along with discussions about adopting modern tram technologies.

The tram system was first brought to Lahore in July 2025 and was later showcased during a test run and public exhibition at the Expo Centre Lahore in August 2025.

Current Status

Officials confirmed that the project is still under development, with further planning required before final implementation. No official timeline for full-scale operations has been announced.

Objective of the Project

The electric tram initiative is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to introduce modern and environmentally friendly public transport solutions in Lahore. Despite delays, authorities maintain that the project remains a key part of long-term urban transport planning.
