NASA Ends Rescue Attempt for Aging Swift Space Telescope

NASA has ended an ambitious mission to rescue its aging Swift Observatory after technical problems prevented the spacecraft from safely approaching and capturing the telescope.

NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies announced the decision on Wednesday, ending an effort that aimed to move Swift into a higher and more stable orbit.

The rescue spacecraft, known as Link, was launched in early July as part of a mission designed to extend the life of the Swift Observatory. However, Link experienced difficulties with its control and positioning systems after reaching orbit.

Although flight controllers were able to reduce the spacecraft’s initial spinning motion, further technical issues made it impossible to safely complete the planned rescue operation.

Swift Telescope Expected to Re-enter Atmosphere

With the rescue attempt cancelled, NASA said the Swift Observatory will gradually lose altitude and is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere later this year. The telescope is not expected to re-enter before October.

Swift has operated for more than two decades and has played an important role in studying powerful events across the universe, including gamma-ray bursts and stellar explosions.

NASA had committed about $30 million to the rescue project in an effort to move the observatory into a safer, longer-lasting orbit.

The telescope’s orbital decline accelerated because of increased solar activity, which affected the upper atmosphere and contributed to greater orbital drag.

Link Mission to Continue as a Technology Demonstration

Despite the unsuccessful rescue attempt, Katalyst Space Technologies plans to continue operating the Link spacecraft near Swift.

The company will use the remaining mission to demonstrate technologies that could support future satellite servicing and rescue missions.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the unsuccessful outcome did not diminish the value of attempting the mission, highlighting the importance of developing new technologies for servicing spacecraft in orbit.

The Swift Observatory has provided scientists with valuable observations of some of the universe’s most energetic events since its launch more than 20 years ago.
