Pakistan Revises Fuel Prices From September 1
The federal government has announced a minor adjustment in petroleum prices, increasing the price of petrol while reducing the rate for high-speed diesel (HSD).
Under the latest revision, petrol has become Rs0.77 more expensive per litre, while the price of HSD has been reduced by Rs1.03 per litre.
The new rates will take effect from September 1, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division.
New Petrol and Diesel Prices
Following the adjustment, the prices are:
Petrol: Rs342.79 per litre
High-Speed Diesel: Rs370.41 per litre
The government continues to collect taxes and duties of Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel.
Fuel Prices Remain Linked to International Markets
The latest adjustment comes as Pakistan continues to revise petroleum prices in response to changes in international oil markets.
Earlier this year, both petrol and diesel prices recorded significant increases. HSD had reached Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, while petrol peaked at Rs458.41 per litre during the same period.
Since then, prices have gradually moved lower as market conditions changed.
In July, the government announced a shift toward more frequent fuel price reviews. The move was aimed at allowing domestic prices to respond more quickly to fluctuations in international crude oil and petroleum product markets.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) was assigned a greater role in determining fuel prices based on international trends and other relevant factors.
Impact on Consumers and Businesses
Changes in petrol prices directly affect millions of motorists, particularly users of cars, motorcycles, rickshaws and other small vehicles.
Diesel prices are also important for the wider economy because HSD is widely used by heavy transport operators, power generation facilities and large generators. Changes in diesel costs can therefore influence transportation and operating expenses across different sectors.
Petrol and high-speed diesel remain among the country’s most important petroleum products in terms of demand and government revenue, with monthly sales significantly higher than those of kerosene.
