EuroVolley 2026 Set to Begin as Four Nations Host Men’s Championship

The 2026 CEV Men’s Volleyball European Championship is set to begin on Wednesday, September 9, with Bulgaria, Finland, Italy and Romania sharing hosting duties for the continental tournament.
The championship, officially known as CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men, will feature 24 of Europe’s top national teams competing for the European title.
The tournament will conclude with the medal matches at the Unipol Forum in Assago, Italy, on September 26. The champion will also earn Europe’s first qualification spot for the men’s volleyball competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
In addition, three qualification places for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup will be awarded through the tournament.
24 Teams Divided Into Four Pools
The 24 participating teams have been divided into four groups of six, with each pool being hosted by one of the four host nations.
The top four teams from each pool will advance to the round of 16. The knockout stage will be held in Bulgaria and Turin, Italy.
The same venues will host the quarterfinals before the remaining four teams move to Assago for the semifinals and medal matches.
Bulgaria Begin Campaign at Home
Bulgaria will open the tournament in Pool B when they face North Macedonia at Arena 8888 in Sofia on September 9.
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time.
Bulgaria will enter the competition with confidence after winning the silver medal at last year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
The hosts will also be looking to return to the European Championship podium for the first time since 2009. Bulgaria’s EuroVolley record includes one silver medal and four bronze medals.
Pool B also includes Poland, Ukraine, Portugal and Israel.
Poland Among the Main Favorites
World No. 1 Poland is one of the leading contenders for the European title.
Poland are the defending EuroVolley champions and have also won the last two Volleyball Nations League titles. They claimed silver at the previous Olympic Games and bronze at the most recent World Championship.
Poland have won the European Championship twice, in 2009 and 2023, and have also collected five silver and four bronze medals.
As the host nation for the 2027 World Cup, Poland have already secured their place in that competition.
Romania Also Start Campaign on Wednesday
Pool D will begin its schedule on the same day at the BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca, where hosts Romania will face Latvia.
The group also includes France, Turkiye, Germany and Switzerland.
France, ranked eighth in the world, are the highest-ranked team in the pool. Turkiye and Germany are also among the strongest sides in the group, ranked 10th and 12th respectively.
France won the European Championship in 2015 and have also secured four silver and two bronze medals in the competition.
Romania are the only other team in Pool D to have won the European title. Their championship triumph came in 1963, while they have also earned two silver and two bronze medals.
Germany have one European silver medal and are the only team in the group to have previously won the men’s World Championship, achieving that feat in 1970.
Road to Los Angeles 2028
EuroVolley 2026 carries additional importance because of its connection to the next Olympic cycle.
The European champion will secure the continent’s first men’s volleyball qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The tournament will therefore provide an important opportunity for Europe’s leading volleyball nations to compete for both continental honours and a place on the road to the next Olympics.
