Matt Renshaw Hits Maiden ODI Century as Australia Beat Zimbabwe

Matt Renshaw scored his first One-Day International century as Australia defeated Zimbabwe by 59 runs in the opening match of their three-game ODI series in Harare on Tuesday.
The victory marked a strong start to Australia’s nine-match tour of southern Africa, which includes both limited-overs and Test cricket.
Australia posted 294-8 after winning the toss, while Zimbabwe were bowled out for 235 in 45.1 overs.
Renshaw Leads Australia’s Batting
Renshaw played a crucial innings after Australia were reduced to 107-4.
Batting at No. 6, the left-hander scored 109 runs from 94 deliveries, striking seven fours and three sixes.
His century was his first in ODI cricket and surpassed his previous best score of 61 in the format.
Renshaw also built two important partnerships to help Australia post a competitive total. He added 72 runs with Alex Carey, who scored 27, before putting together another 75-run stand with 19-year-old Oliver Peake, who contributed 30.
Renshaw was eventually dismissed when he mistimed a delivery from Newman Nyamhuri and was caught at midwicket by Wessly Madhevere.
The Australian batter said his main focus was to rebuild the innings after his team lost several wickets.
“It was really nice. The pitch was nice,” Renshaw said after receiving the Player of the Match award.
He also noted that almost a decade had passed since his previous international century, which came during a Test against Pakistan in Sydney in January 2017.
Connolly Adds Valuable Runs
Cooper Connolly also played an important role for Australia, scoring 51 from 62 deliveries.
The 22-year-old reached his second ODI half-century, hitting four fours and three sixes.
His innings ended when Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza bowled him with a turning delivery that struck the off stump.
Travis Head had earlier fallen for just four runs.
Nyamhuri Impresses for Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri produced an impressive performance with the ball despite Australia’s strong total.
The 20-year-old seamer claimed a career-best 5-62 from nine overs.
His five-wicket haul helped Zimbabwe restrict Australia after the visitors had appeared capable of posting an even larger score.
Ellis Leads Australia’s Bowling Attack
Nathan Ellis was Australia’s leading bowler during Zimbabwe’s chase.
The fast bowler recorded career-best figures of 5-31, including the important wickets of Craig Ervine and several other key Zimbabwe batters.
Zimbabwe struggled early and fell to 62-4 before Ervine and Raza attempted to rebuild the innings.
The experienced pair added 98 runs for the fifth wicket.
Ervine top-scored with 59 before Ellis bowled him, while Raza made 57 before being dismissed by Spencer Johnson.
Zimbabwe eventually ran out of wickets and were dismissed for 235 with 4.5 overs remaining.
Australia Continue Southern Africa Tour
The second and third ODIs against Zimbabwe will complete Australia’s series in Harare, with the final match scheduled for Sunday.
Australia will then travel to South Africa for three ODIs beginning on September 24.
The tour will conclude with a three-Test series against South Africa.
