Pakistan Calls for Dialogue as Yemen Conflict Escalates
Pakistan has called for dialogue and diplomacy to address the escalating conflict involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, as tensions around the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait continue to grow.
The Foreign Office recently described the situation around the Red Sea chokepoint as “exceptionally serious” and said the conflict should be addressed through diplomatic efforts rather than coercive measures. At the same time, Islamabad has reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.
Pakistan Seeks Diplomatic Solution
Pakistan’s position comes amid renewed fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Pakistani officials have also raised concerns about the impact of attacks on commercial shipping and the wider consequences for regional security.
At a United Nations Security Council meeting, Pakistan condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and called for an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices.
The Bab al-Mandab Strait is a major maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Any prolonged disruption in the area could affect international shipping, trade and energy supplies.
Long-Running Yemen Conflict
The conflict in Yemen has continued for years, involving the Houthis and other Yemeni political and military groups, as well as regional powers.
Saudi Arabia began a military campaign against the Houthis in 2015 as part of a wider coalition. A period of relative calm followed a ceasefire in 2022, but fighting and regional tensions have intensified again in recent weeks.
The latest escalation has also increased international concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea and the possibility of a broader regional conflict.
Humanitarian Concerns
The continuing conflict has also placed additional pressure on Yemen’s civilian population and already strained humanitarian situation.
International organisations have repeatedly highlighted the country’s need for humanitarian assistance, while renewed fighting could further affect access to food, healthcare and other essential services.
The security situation around Bab al-Mandab is also significant beyond Yemen because the waterway is used by commercial vessels travelling between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Calls for Negotiations
Pakistan has supported efforts aimed at restoring stability and restarting political negotiations.
China has also called for restraint and a return to negotiations, while emphasising the importance of protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. The United States, meanwhile, has called on the Houthis to halt their military advances and attacks.
Pakistan’s recent statements therefore combine support for Saudi Arabia’s security with calls for diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.
Way Forward
A lasting settlement would require negotiations involving the relevant Yemeni parties and regional stakeholders. Pakistan has said it supports an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process, while international calls have focused on reducing violence and protecting maritime navigation.
As tensions continue around Yemen and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, diplomatic efforts remain focused on preventing further escalation and restoring regional stability.
