Patrick Reed Retires From BMW PGA Championship Due to Hand Injury

Patrick Reed was forced to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship on Friday after suffering a hand injury during the second round at Wentworth in Virginia Water, England.

The American golfer stopped playing midway through his round after struggling significantly on the course. Reed was 9-over par for the day and 5-over for the tournament when he decided to retire.

Reed Leaves Course After Drive on 10th Hole

Reed was seen leaving the course after hitting his drive from the 10th tee. He appeared to be flexing his left hand before departing, although no further details about the severity of the injury were immediately available.

His withdrawal came a day after an impressive opening round. Reed carded a 4-under 68 on Thursday, leaving him just two shots behind the overnight leader at the European Tour’s flagship event.

Difficult Second Round for Reed

Reed’s second round proved much more challenging, with several high scores appearing on his card.

He recorded a triple bogey on the par-4 first hole and followed it with a double bogey on the par-5 fourth. Another double bogey came at the eighth hole, contributing to his 9-over score for the round before he ended his participation.

Reed Leads Race to Dubai Standings

Despite the setback at Wentworth, Reed has enjoyed a strong 2026 season. He won both the Dubai Desert Classic and the Qatar Masters earlier this year.

Those performances have helped Reed move to the top of the European Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai standings. He currently leads the rankings ahead of four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
