PKLI Rawalpindi Performs First Kidney Transplant
The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI) Rawalpindi has successfully completed its first kidney transplant, marking an important milestone for the newly operational facility.
PKLI Board of Directors Chairman Professor Dr Saeed Akhtar said the first transplant is a significant achievement for any medical institution.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi alongside a team of doctors, he confirmed that the centre is now fully functional and has so far performed two liver transplants and one kidney transplant.
New Patient Application Being Introduced
Dr Saeed Akhtar also announced that PKLI Rawalpindi is preparing to launch a new application that will allow patients to submit their medical information and other relevant data from their homes.
The initiative is expected to make the initial patient registration and information-sharing process more convenient.
PKLI’s Kidney Transplant Program
According to Dr Saeed Akhtar, PKLI Lahore performed its first kidney transplant in 2018.
He said the institute has continued to expand access to specialized treatment and provides significant financial assistance to deserving patients.
PKLI currently offers up to 90% financial support to around 80% of patients, while deserving patients can initially receive treatment worth up to Rs50,000 free of cost.
International-Standard Medical Facilities
Dr Saeed Akhtar said PKLI Rawalpindi has a team of specialists and facilities designed to provide advanced medical care.
He added that the centre is now fully operational and has the infrastructure required to perform complex transplant procedures.
Focus on Hospital Safety
Speaking about hospital safety, Dr Saeed Akhtar referred to the recent PIMS hospital fire incident and highlighted the importance of effective fire protection systems.
He said PKLI has a complete fire safety system in place, which remains operational and is regularly monitored.
The successful kidney transplant marks another step in the expansion of PKLI’s transplant services in Rawalpindi, following the facility’s earlier liver transplant procedures.
