Mexico will begin their home FIFA World Cup campaign against South Africa on Thursday, with strong expectations on the host nation to secure a winning start at the Estadio Azteca.

The match marks the return of World Cup action to the historic stadium, which previously hosted matches in 1970 and 1986. It also brings back memories of the 2010 tournament opener, where South Africa held Mexico to a 1-1 draw.

This time, Mexico enter the match as clear favourites. A victory in the opening game is seen as important for their chances of topping Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic.

Mexico arrive in strong form, having gone unbeaten in their last eight matches. This run has boosted confidence in coach Javier Aguirre’s squad ahead of the tournament.

A large home crowd is expected at the renovated Azteca Stadium, with more than 80,000 fans anticipated for the opening match of the expanded World Cup format. However, the pressure of expectations will also be high for the hosts.

South Africa return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010. Coach Hugo Broos believes his team can compete strongly despite facing one of the tournament favourites.

He emphasized that discipline and focus will be key for his side in a challenging opening atmosphere.

South Africa’s preparations were affected by travel and visa-related delays for some members of their squad, reducing training time before the tournament.

Despite this, the team remains confident after a strong qualifying campaign and will aim to challenge Mexico in the opening fixture.
