Daniil Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Wednesday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, where he will face American player Tommy Paul.
The fifth-seeded Russian won 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 24 minutes without facing a single break point. He secured the decisive break at 6-5 in the second set before serving out the match.
Medvedev said he was pleased with his performance, particularly his ability to put pressure on Tsitsipas and maintain a strong rhythm on returns.
The victory improved Medvedev’s head-to-head record against the Greek to 11 wins in 16 tour-level meetings. The Russian previously won the Shanghai title in 2019.
Paul booked his quarter-final place by defeating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 7-6(7-5), 6-4. Bergs had produced a major upset in the previous round by eliminating second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
Despite a strong second-set fightback from Bergs, Paul maintained his composure to secure the win.
Jodar and Ruud Advance
Spain’s rising talent Rafael Jodar also reached the last eight after recovering from a set down to beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-2.
Jodar will next face Norway’s Casper Ruud, who advanced after fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with an apparent knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the opening set.
Ruud said Auger-Aliassime appeared to experience discomfort after an awkward step during the match. The Canadian received medical attention and continued with strapping around his left knee before retiring.
The Shanghai Masters continues with the remaining players competing for places in the semi-finals.
