Louis Oosthuizen Signals LIV Golf Exit, Citing Travel and Scheduling Concerns

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen has indicated that he is ready to leave LIV Golf, saying it is time to move on from the breakaway circuit as uncertainty continues over its future.

The South African golfer, who was among the early players to join LIV Golf and competed in its inaugural event in June 2022, said he wanted greater flexibility in planning his tournament schedule and managing the physical demands of professional golf.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post ahead of this week’s Hong Kong Open, the 2010 British Open champion explained that the extensive travel required by LIV Golf no longer suited his priorities.

Oosthuizen said he preferred to spend several weeks competing in the same region rather than travelling long distances for individual tournaments. He also stressed the importance of managing his body and organising his own schedule.

Although he expressed appreciation for LIV Golf and its team-based format, the 44-year-old indicated that his priorities had changed.

His comments come at a difficult time for LIV Golf, which is facing questions about its financial backing and long-term direction following a funding decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

In April, the PIF announced plans to reduce its financial support for the circuit. LIV Golf subsequently secured investment from BC Partners Credit and is expected to decide whether to wind down its existing operation or pursue a revised business model known as LIV 2.0.

Former world number one Jon Rahm is also among the prominent names reported to be leaving the circuit, adding to uncertainty surrounding its player roster.

Oosthuizen remains listed as captain of Southern Guards GC on LIV Golf’s official website. Reuters said it had contacted the organisation to confirm his departure.

According to reports in US media, players have an informal deadline of October 25 to decide whether they will remain with the league.

Oosthuizen’s potential exit would represent another significant development for LIV Golf as the organisation considers its next steps and players assess their future commitments.

For the South African, however, a more manageable schedule, reduced travel and greater control over his playing commitments appear to be the main considerations as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
