Apple Extends Free Satellite Features for Older iPhones for Another Year
Apple has extended free access to its satellite communication features for another year on compatible older iPhone models.
The extension was confirmed in a footnote included with Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, giving existing users additional time to use satellite-based services without paying a separate subscription fee.
Which iPhones Are Eligible?
The extended access applies to compatible iPhones beginning with the iPhone 14 series, which introduced Apple’s satellite connectivity capabilities in 2022.
To qualify for the latest extension, eligible devices must have been activated before September 9, 2026.
The offer also covers subsequent generations, including compatible models from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series.
This marks the third extension for iPhone 14 users. Apple previously extended the complimentary period for iPhone 15 owners, while iPhone 16 users are receiving their first extension.
Satellite Services Remain Free
Eligible users will continue to have access to several satellite-powered features, including:
- Emergency SOS via satellite
- Messages via satellite
- Find My via satellite
- Roadside Assistance via satellite
These services are designed to provide communication and location-related capabilities when cellular networks and Wi-Fi are unavailable. Availability can vary depending on the user’s country or region.
Apple Has Not Announced Future Pricing
Apple continues to describe the complimentary access as a free trial, but the company has yet to reveal whether it plans to introduce subscription charges in the future or what those charges might be.
When satellite connectivity was introduced with the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple initially provided two years of free access. Several extensions have since allowed early adopters to continue using the services beyond the original trial period.
For now, owners of eligible iPhones can continue using Apple’s satellite features for at least another year without an additional subscription charge.
