Asian Games 2026: Floating Village Opens to House Athletes in Nagoya

A unique floating accommodation facility has been established in Japan to house athletes and officials participating in the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya.
Instead of building a traditional athletes’ village, organisers have arranged accommodation aboard an Italian cruise ship docked at Nagoya Port.
Cruise Ship to Accommodate 4,000 Athletes and Officials
The 290-metre-long Costa Serena cruise ship will serve as a floating village during the Asian Games.
Around 4,000 athletes and officials are expected to stay aboard the vessel during the event. The ship provides accommodation along with various facilities for residents.
Athletes began arriving at the floating village ahead of the official start of the Games, making it one of the more unusual accommodation arrangements in Asian Games history.
Floating Village Set Up at Nagoya Port
The floating village has been established at Nagoya Port, with athletes reaching the accommodation facility by sea.
Organisers have prepared the ship to provide essential services and facilities for athletes and officials throughout the competition.

Why Was a Traditional Athletes’ Village Not Built?
Several temporary accommodation arrangements have been planned for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Organisers decided not to construct a permanent athletes’ village, with cost considerations being one of the factors behind the alternative arrangements.
The use of a cruise ship provides accommodation capacity while avoiding the expense of developing a separate large-scale residential complex specifically for the Games.
Asian Games 2026 to Begin on September 19
The Asian Games 2026 are scheduled to officially begin on September 19 in Japan.
