Australia and India Set for High-Stakes Women’s T20 World Cup Clash at Lord’s

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Australia and India will meet in a crucial Group 1 encounter of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Lord’s in London on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake for India.

Australia have enjoyed a dominant campaign so far, winning all four of their group-stage matches. Their impressive net run rate of +4.724 has placed them firmly at the top of the standings, making them overwhelming favourites to qualify for the knockout stage.

India, currently second in Group 1, have collected six points from four matches after victories over Pakistan, the Netherlands and Bangladesh. Their only defeat came against South Africa, leaving Harmanpreet Kaur’s side needing one more positive result to strengthen their semi-final hopes.

A victory over Australia would almost certainly guarantee India’s place in the last four, regardless of the outcome between South Africa and Bangladesh. If India lose, they will depend on Bangladesh causing an upset against South Africa while hoping their superior net run rate remains enough to secure qualification.

The match will also be a historic occasion for India, as it will be the team’s first-ever Women’s T20 International at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Players to Watch

India will rely heavily on vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who has been in outstanding form with 167 runs in four innings. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani has also impressed, leading the tournament’s wicket-taking charts with 12 wickets.

Australia’s strength has come from consistent contributions across the squad rather than individual dominance. Ellyse Perry has scored 127 runs during the tournament, while Sophie Molineux has taken six wickets.

Recent Form Favors India

Although Australia remain one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket, India have enjoyed encouraging results against them in recent meetings. India eliminated Australia in the semi-finals of the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup and later secured a T20I series victory in Australia earlier this year.

India vs Australia Women’s T20 Head-to-Head

Australia have historically dominated the rivalry, winning 27 of the 37 Women’s T20 Internationals played between the two teams. India have claimed nine victories, while one match ended in a tie.

In Women’s T20 World Cup history, Australia lead the head-to-head record 5-1, including memorable wins in the 2020 final and the 2023 semi-final. India’s only World Cup victory over Australia came during the 2018 group stage, when Smriti Mandhana played a match-winning innings of 83 runs.
