Australia, Czechia and Italy Complete Final Preparations for Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage

Australia, Czechia and Italy have concluded their preparations for the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage 2026 after competing in the Haarlem Invitational Tournament in the Netherlands.

The event featured four of the world’s leading softball nations, including host Netherlands, Italy, Czechia and Australia. Despite weather-related disruptions affecting the schedule, the tournament provided valuable match practice ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

World No. 6 Netherlands finished with a perfect 2-0 record, while Australia posted a 2-2 mark. Czechia and Italy each recorded one victory during the competition.

Italy Edge Australia in Tournament Finale

The final game of the tournament saw Italy secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Australia in extra innings.

After eight scoreless innings, Italy broke the deadlock in the ninth inning. Erika Piancastelli reached base before designated player McKenzie Barbara delivered the game-winning RBI single, allowing Alessandra Rotondo to score the decisive run.

Italy relied on a strong pitching performance throughout the contest, using six pitchers during the game. Alexia Lacatena earned the win after allowing just one hit over three innings while recording several key outs.

Netherlands Remain Unbeaten

The Netherlands completed the tournament undefeated, highlighted by a walk-off victory against Australia in extra innings.

Dinet Oosting delivered the winning hit in the eighth inning, while pitcher Lisa Hop impressed with five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out nine batters.

Valuable Experience Ahead of World Cup Action

Although weather conditions resulted in the cancellation of several games, the tournament offered all participating teams an opportunity to fine-tune their squads before the Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage begins.

Italy’s scheduled matchup against the Netherlands was among the games affected by poor weather conditions.

Women’s Softball World Cup 2026/2027 Format

The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup 2026/2027 will be played in two stages.

The first Group Stage tournament will take place in Prague, Czechia, from June 16 to June 20, 2026. Additional group-stage events are scheduled for Lima, Peru, in July and Oklahoma City, USA, in September.

The top two teams from each group, along with two wild-card teams, will qualify for the Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027.

The championship event is set to be hosted in Redcliffe, Australia, from April 5 to April 11, 2027.

With preparations now complete, teams will turn their focus toward securing qualification for the World Cup Finals and competing for international softball’s biggest prize.
